History/background

The construction of the National Theater began in March, 1982, and it was officially opened on Oct 31st, 1987. So far, the National Theater has been the best venue in Taiwan for the performing arts: classic opera, ballet, modern dance, Chinese opera, modern theater. The building was designed by architect Mr. Yang Zhuo-Cheng and constructed by Ret-Ser Engineering Agency. Experts from Germany and Holland supervised the finer details of the acoustics, stage, air conditioning, lighting and soundproofing.

Exterior features

The National Theater takes the form of traditional palace, and imitates Tai-He-Dian (the Palace of Great Harmony) in Forbidden City of Beijing. The roof used on the theater is called Wu-Dian, which symbolizes the highest social ranking in Ming and Qing Dynasty. The nine mythical animals follow by the fairy figure on the roof beam indicate the royal status of the resident, and they are believed to protect the building from fire and
disasters. 5 different colors are used: red, green, white, blue and gold, to make the building lively and grand. This is another important feature of Chinese palaces.
